In an unnamed country under authoritarian rule, John Sorel is part of a resistance movement and evades the authorities, for now, with the help of his wife Magda and his mother. John plans to escape to the border but will wait for his family to leave legally before he crosses; they simply have to obtain visas from the Consul and all will be well.
Magda and her family aren’t the only citizens with this idea, though, and the visa process is long and complex. Day after day, the Consul’s office is full of those waiting, stuck in bureaucratic limbo with no end in sight. Tension and desperation build in the waiting room as illness threatens Magda’s family and the visa process proves increasingly erratic and corrupt. Somehow, the elusive Consul himself is always just out of reach, leaving the future of John, Magda, and their family uncertain. Magda, unable to control her destiny, wrests what little control she has back with her final act.
The Consul, Gian Carlo Menotti’s first full-length opera, won the Pulitzer Prize and the New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award in the 1950s. The timely post-WWII subject matter is emblematic of the verismo movement of the 20th century, which sought to portray the often bleak realities of everyday people. Menotti’s music and libretto are also typical of verismo style, full of dramatic declamatory singing that unites text and melody. This style notably rejects both the bel canto conventions of the preceding Romantic era and the atonality that emerged in the early 20th century.
